Audiences and critics alike have been quick and generous with their praise of the public performances of the concert, and a sampling of what has been said and written about it over the years can be found on the reviews page. A more thorough examination of the evolution of the concert will be forthcoming shortly. In the meantime, visitors can read the biographies of the musicians as well as the kind comments of such luminaries as Maria Jolas and Richard Ellmann.

Below is a select chronology of performances of the concert since 1975.

 


DATE VENUE

April 1975:

The first performance took place on April 21 in the Casadesus Recital Hall on the campus of the State University of New York at Binghamton.

June 1976:

James Joyce Colloquium, June 16-18, at S.U.N.Y.-Buffalo. Performance given in association with a paper delivered by Prof. Zack Bowen. Reviewed in Fall 1976 issue of James Joyce Quarterly, p. 6.

June 1977:

6th International James Joyce Symposium, June 16-18, Dublin, Ireland. Performance by special invitation at Trinity College and United Dublin Arts Club.

June 1980:

Symposium of the James Joyce Society, June 14-16, held in Provincetown, MA. Reviewed in the Boston Globe 6/22/80.

February 1982:

James Joyce Society Centennial Birthday Celebration, 2/2/82, Gotham Book Mart, New York City.

Centennial celebration of the James Joyce Society of Washington, D.C., Feb. 1-7. Performance before the Irish Ambassador and family in the Hall of Nations, Georgetown University.

James Joyce Centennial Conference, Feb. 15-21, at S.U.N.Y.-Purchase.

March 1982:

Performance at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, sponsored by the Michigan Council on the Humanities as part of the University's Centennial celebration, March 25-26.

April 1982:

Release of the recording (LP) Music from the Works of James Joyce. Subsequently featured in broadcasts on:

  • WQXR, New York, by Robert Sherman
  • WGBH, Boston, by Robert J. Lurtsema and syndicated nationally
  • The Voice of America
  • The program Woordt on BRT (Belgian National Radio)
  • The Mike Murphy Show on RTE (Irish National Radio)

May 1982:

Performances in the Pub Theatre, Village Coach House, Brookline, MA, May 16-19.

June 1982:

Joyceve 1982. Performance as part of the Dublin United Arts Club Joycean Centennial observance, June 15.

November 1982:

The Importance of Being Nobody. Centennial conference sponsored jointly by the Commune Roma and the Irish Embassy in Rome, Italy, Nov. 5-8.

May 1998:

Performance in the Theatersaal of the Brotfabrik Kulturzentrum, Bonn, Germany, 5/20/98.

June 1999:

Bloomsday performance at Kunstwerkstatt am Hellweg in Bochum, Germany, 6/16/99.

January 2004:

Re-release of the recording Music from the Works of James Joyce as a CD in observance of the Bloomsday Centenary (June 16, 2004).
