Selected Songs from the Works of James Joyce

There are thousands of musical references and allusions scattered throughout Joyce's works, and it would require a monumental effort to catalog and treat them all in detail (though some scholars have valiantly made the attempt — see the Bibliography). For the purposes of this section of the Web site, we will confine the discussion to only 36 of them. As a group, however, their relevance covers virtually the entire James Joyce canon, in particular Ulysses, Dubliners, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, but also including Chamber Music, Stephen Hero, and Finnegans Wake.

The songs have been divided into two groups, according to the CD on which they are performed by the artists, tenor Kevin McDermott and pianist Ralph Richey. Click on an icon below to enter the main discussion area for that group of songs; or click on a song title for lyrics, as well as information about the composers and the literary context of the music.
